A think-tank report identified the key barriers to the development of a healthy philanthropic culture among City of London professionals. Most City high-fliers were 'so busy' they did not consider the possibilities for giving money back to society.

A report said that legacy giving was likely to increase and could soon include 'living legacies' by people who were still alive: older people had more disposable income, and might increasingly have the confidence to give away their wealth before they died.

A report said that contrary to a 'patronizing myth', the richest in society were, in fact, the most likely to give to charity, and also the most generous when they did give. 50 per cent of the wealthiest 10 per cent of households by income claimed to have donated to charity within the previous month, those actually giving averaging £60 per month: but only 15 per cent of the poorest 10 per cent of households claimed to donate, those actually giving averaging just £14.

Researchers examined the views of wealthy people (defined as those with an annual income of £200,000 plus) on charitable giving. Large committed donors tended to be landowners with inherited wealth, self-made businessmen, or listed company chairmen, rather than salaried employees. Motivators and barriers to giving were broadly similar across the different donor groups and, in large part, mirrored the findings of previous research with the general public.
